Dr Penny Flett, CEO of Brightwater Care Group, was named WA's 2009 Australian of the Year.

Mrs Helen Smith OAM has retired as Executive Director of the Eye Surgery Foundation, to be replaced by Matthew Whitfield (as Administrator). Helen helped establish the facility back in 1991. She will remain as ESF's Company Secretary and Director on the board of the charitable Eye Surgery Foundation Trust.

Ms Nicole Feely has commenced this month as the new Chief Executive, South Metropolitan Area Health Service, replacing Acting Chief Executive Dr Mark Platell. For the past six years, Nicole has been Chief Executive Officer of St Vincent's Health in Melbourne …

Ms Cath Stoddart takes up the role of WA's Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer on February 23. She replaces Di Twigg, who was acting in the role. Since December 2007, Cath had been Acting Regional Director of WACHS – Kimberley.

UWA's Medical School's Prof Fiona Lake has been promoted to the Eric Saint Chair in Medicine at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

Nick Francis has stepped down as Rural Health West's CEO. His replacement is Belinda Bailey, who previously worked at the Cancer Foundation and was the former WA State Manager at the RACGP. Wendy Wardell has been promoted from Events and Marketing Coordinator to Marketing Team Leader.

Prof Fiona Stanley AC has won the Bupa Australia Leadership and Innovation Award as part of Research Australia's Thank You Day Awards. She has also been appointed, along with Dr Helen Milroy and others, to the new Indigenous Implementation Board, which aims to improve social and economic outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

Sydney IVF (Perth) and Hollywood Fertility Centre have appointed Colin La Galia as General Manager and Board Secretary. Colin was previously Operations Manager WA, SA & NT for Konekt Australia and Regional Sales and Marketing Manager (Australia and New Zealand) for the Visiomed Group.

The position of business development manager with Surgical House remains vacant following the departure of Ms Cecilia Omlor.

Perth-based Mr Giulio Cimetta has retired from the board of Australasian health centre operator ATOS Wellness.

Curtin University academic Prof Peter Howat has been awarded an American Academy of Health Behavior Fellowship to further his work in behavioural health research.

The 2008 Premier's Awards for Excellence in Public Sector Management included wins by the Women and Newborn Health Service's Perron Rotary Express Milk (PREM) Bank in the "Creating a Healthy, Safe and Vibrant Western Australia" category and the UWA Rural Clinical School in the "Creating Jobs and Economic Prosperity" category. The Rural Clinical School was also a finalist in the "Strengthening Regional Western Australia" category, while WA Health Networks was a finalist in the "Improving Government" category.
